The challenge

The primary challenge was to design a legible typeface that also captured the unique artistic and social movements of Delia Derbyshire's era, imbued with a distinct '60s feel, while avoiding obvious or predictable design choices. The aim was to create something truly unique, reflecting Delia's innovative spirit and her unconventional use of everyday items as musical instruments. The aim was to translate extensive conceptual research into a sophisticated typographic design, achieving refined cohesion in structural form, stylistic nuance, and visual cadence throughout the letterset.

Research & Planning

Delia Derbyshire & Contextual Research

The research phase involved a deep dive into Delia Derbyshire's life, from her childhood experiences marked by the war, through her academic years, and up to her influential time at the BBC. Beyond her professional journey, the research also explored her personal interests and relationships. Crucially, socio-cultural factors, design trends, and typography prevalent during her era were investigated. This research process was instrumental in shaping the final design, both for the typeface and the accompanying poster, providing rich insights into the historical and artistic context.

Designing The Solution

Alphabet Development & Sketching

The initial development of the custom alphabet involved extensive sketching and iterative refinement of letterforms. Early explorations included wavy-shaped fonts, which were ultimately dismissed for appearing too predictable and lacking conceptual depth. The creative breakthrough emerged from an unexpected source: Delia Derbyshire’s iconic green lampshade, a personal object she famously used to manipulate sound. Drawing inspiration from the lampshade’s upper structure, that's why the font was named Lampshade Font, paying homage to Delia’s inventive spirit and aesthetic sensibility. A secondary typeface, Lampshade Font Light, was also developed. This lighter variant retained the core structural elements inspired by the lampshade, but incorporated simplified straight lines to achieve a cleaner, more minimalistic appearance. Both typefaces were refined using Glyphr, a browser-based font editor. However, technical challenges arose during the export to Adobe Illustrator, particularly in preserving custom kerning. To resolve this, manual adjustments were applied using Illustrator’s “optical” kerning setting to ensure optimal spacing and visual harmony across compositions.

Conclusion

This project successfully coupled research into Delia Derbyshire's life and work with the design of a unique typeface, drawing from the cultural, historical, and artistic aspects of her time. The "Lampshade Font" stands as a testament to the ability to draw inspiration from unconventional sources, creating a sober yet concise typeface with a distinctive retro feel. Despite technical challenges encountered during font development, the dedication to refinement ensured a professional outcome that adapts to the brief's suggestions.
